How To Create a Professional Resume
Resume review is a crucial part of the hiring process. Most employers take thirty seconds or less to review a resume, so it is critical to make sure your resume is effective at showcasing what makes you a great candidate. Here are some tips for creating a successful resume.
What makes you unique from other candidates?
- Highlight what makes you stand out from everyone else.
- Tell a story with your resume. Show your progress and learning process through your accomplishments.
Formatting matters!
- Clarity is very important to making your resume easy to review and highlighting the most important elements.
- Make it short and sweet. No resume should exceed two pages. One page is even better!
- Make sure you name and contact information is clearly visible at the top of the page.
- Use bulleted lists, they're easier to read quickly than paragraphs.
- Use reverse chronological order. List your most recent experience and education first.
- Use fonts that are easy to read. Some good ones are Verdana, Arial, and Helvetica. Use 10-12 pt. font.
- Templates are your friend - they save time and effort!
- Save your resume as a PDF so the format doesn't change when the file is opened. Don't let your hard work go to waste!
Tailor your resume to the job description.
- Find out the challenges, goals, and philosophies of the business you want to work for and tailor your resume to those things.
- List jobs related to the job you want: If you're applying to a journalist position, the fact that you worked at McDonald's when you were fifteen isn't that relevant.

Be selective.
- Don't list your GPA unless it is 3.5 or above.
- Listing majors and minors from college is helpful.
- Mention previous promotions.
- Highlight your accomplishments more than your responsibilities.
- Around six bullets per section keeps the resume from getting too long.
What is an objective?
- An objective tells the employer who you are, your goals, and what you bring to the table
- Make it concise, preferable one short sentence.
Use action verbs!
- Use strong action verbs when describing your previous experience! It highlights the tasks you can do.

Other Tips
- Make sure your email address is professional.
- Include your full name in the file title. The employer probably receives a lot of files names "resume". If you do this, your resume can get lost.
- PROOFREAD! Multiple times! You can also have someone else check for errors or use a program like grammarly. Spelling, grammar, and formatting mistakes do not leave a good first impression.
